This code represents inflammation of the meninges (membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord) caused by an enterovirus. It is typically a self-limiting viral infection, often presenting with fever, headache, and neck stiffness. Unlike bacterial meningitis, it is generally less severe and rarely life-threatening.

Use this code when documentation explicitly states a diagnosis of enteroviral meningitis. This diagnosis is often supported by cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis confirming viral etiology and ruling out bacterial causes, along with positive enterovirus PCR or culture. It applies to cases where the specific viral agent is identified as an enterovirus.

• Ensure the documentation specifies "enteroviral" and not just "viral" meningitis; if the specific virus is unknown, a more general viral meningitis code may be appropriate.
• Do not confuse with bacterial meningitis (G00.-) or other specified types of viral meningitis (A87.1-A87.8).
• Code any associated neurological complications or sequelae separately, if documented.
