Carcinoma in situ of esophagus

This code represents the presence of abnormal, non-invasive cancerous cells confined to the innermost layer of the esophageal lining. These cells have not spread beyond the basement membrane and are considered a pre-invasive form of cancer.

Use this code when pathology reports confirm carcinoma in situ of the esophagus. This diagnosis is typically made following endoscopic biopsy and histological examination. It applies to cases where there is no evidence of invasion into the lamina propria or deeper layers.

• Distinguish carefully from esophageal dysplasia (K22.10, K22.11) which is a less severe precancerous condition.
• Do not use this code if there is any evidence of invasion; instead, refer to codes for malignant neoplasm of the esophagus (C15.-).
• Ensure the pathology report explicitly states "carcinoma in situ" or "intraepithelial carcinoma" of the esophagus.
