Qualitative platelet defects

This code represents disorders where platelets are present in sufficient numbers but do not function correctly, impairing their ability to form a proper clot. These defects can affect platelet adhesion, aggregation, or secretion, leading to abnormal bleeding tendencies.

Use this code for patients diagnosed with conditions such as Glanzmann's thrombasthenia, Bernard-Soulier syndrome, or storage pool disease. Documentation should clearly indicate a qualitative platelet abnormality, often supported by abnormal platelet function tests despite a normal platelet count.

• Distinguish from quantitative platelet disorders (thrombocytopenia or thrombocytosis) where the platelet count itself is abnormal.
• Review documentation carefully to ensure the defect is qualitative, not a secondary effect of medication or another underlying systemic disease.
• Remember the Excludes1 note; never code this with hemolytic-uremic syndrome.
