Postconcussional syndrome

This code represents a complex constellation of symptoms that persist for weeks or months following a mild traumatic brain injury (concussion). These symptoms can include headache, dizziness, fatigue, irritability, insomnia, difficulty concentrating, and memory problems, significantly impacting daily functioning.

Assign this code when a patient presents with persistent symptoms directly attributable to a prior concussion, typically lasting longer than three months. Documentation should clearly link the current symptoms to a previous head injury and rule out other causes.

• Do not use this code for acute concussions; refer to the S06.0- series for current injuries.
• Ensure the medical record explicitly states "postconcussional syndrome" or provides sufficient detail to support the diagnosis.
• Consider co-reporting with codes for specific persistent symptoms (e.g., G44.3 for chronic post-traumatic headache) if clinically appropriate and documented.
