This code signifies a persistent, irrational fear of specific elements or situations found in the natural environment, excluding heights, confined spaces, and animals. Individuals experience intense anxiety or panic when exposed to or anticipating exposure to these natural phenomena, leading to avoidance behaviors and significant distress or functional impairment.

Apply this code when documentation specifies a phobia related to natural environmental phenomena such as storms (e.g., astraphobia), water (e.g., aquaphobia, excluding fear of drowning), or darkness (e.g., nyctophobia). Ensure the patient's fear is disproportionate to the actual danger and causes clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning.

• Differentiate from agoraphobia (F40.00-F40.02) which involves fear of situations where escape might be difficult or help unavailable.
• Do not use for specific phobias of animals (F40.248) or other types of specific phobias (F40.298).
• Ensure the documentation clearly identifies the specific natural environmental trigger to support this "other" category.
