Other situational type phobia

This code represents an irrational and excessive fear of a specific situation that is not otherwise classified as agoraphobia or social phobia. The anxiety or panic response is triggered solely by exposure to or anticipation of the particular situation, leading to avoidance behaviors. The phobia significantly interferes with the individual's normal routine, occupational functioning, or social activities.

Use this code when documentation clearly indicates a specific situational phobia that doesn't fit into other defined categories, such as fear of heights (acrophobia) or enclosed spaces (claustrophobia). Examples include phobia of specific modes of transportation (e.g., flying, driving a car), specific medical procedures (e.g., injections, dental work), or specific environmental situations (e.g., thunderstorms, darkness). Documentation should specify the situational trigger and the resulting distress or impairment.

• Do not use this code for agoraphobia (F40.0x) or social phobia (F40.10, F40.11).
• Ensure the documentation specifies the "other situational type" to differentiate from more specific phobias.
• Sequence this code as the primary diagnosis when it is the focus of the encounter, or as a secondary diagnosis if it contributes to the patient's overall condition.
