Kleptomania

This code represents a recurrent, irresistible urge to steal objects that are not needed for personal use or monetary value. The individual experiences increasing tension before committing the theft and pleasure, gratification, or relief during the act. The stealing is not committed to express anger or vengeance and is not in response to a delusion or hallucination.

Assign this code when documentation clearly indicates a diagnosis of kleptomania, characterized by repetitive, impulsive stealing without a clear motive of need or profit. Supporting documentation should detail the individual's inability to resist the urge, the associated tension and relief, and the absence of other underlying mental conditions explaining the behavior.

• Do not code this if the stealing is a symptom of another mental disorder, such as a depressive episode or a physiological condition affecting the brain.
• Distinguish from shoplifting (Z03.8) when the observation is for suspected mental disorder, as kleptomania is a specific impulse control disorder.
• Ensure the documentation differentiates kleptomania from ordinary theft, which is typically motivated by financial gain or need.
