Dual role transvestism

This code describes a condition where an individual regularly adopts the clothing and mannerisms of the opposite sex, often for psychological gratification, while maintaining an awareness of their biological sex and typically without a desire for permanent sex change. The individual experiences distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning due to this behavior.

This code is appropriate when documentation clearly indicates an individual's recurrent cross-dressing behavior for psychological reasons, distinct from a desire to transition gender, and associated with clinically significant distress or impairment. It should be used when the patient identifies with their biological sex but engages in dual-role transvestism.

• Ensure documentation specifies "dual role" and differentiates from gender dysphoria or a desire for sex reassignment.
• Do not code with F64.2 (gender identity disorder in childhood) as per Excludes1 note.
• Distinguish from F65.1 (fetishistic transvestism), which is primarily driven by sexual arousal rather than identification with the opposite gender role.
