Use this code when documentation indicates a patient is experiencing seizures that are not explicitly defined as epileptic, post-traumatic, or recurrent seizures without further specification. This is appropriate for initial evaluations of unclassified seizures or when a definitive diagnosis of epilepsy has not yet been established.

• Avoid using this code if the documentation clearly specifies epilepsy (e.g., G40.0-G40.4) or status epilepticus (G41.-).
• Ensure documentation differentiates from R56.1 (post-traumatic seizures) and R56.9 (unspecified seizure), as these are Excludes1 notes.
• Query the provider for more specific seizure type or etiology if possible to allow for more precise coding.
