Deficient saccadic eye movements

This code describes an impairment in the rapid, conjugate eye movements (saccades) that allow us to quickly shift our gaze between points of interest. Patients with deficient saccadic eye movements may experience difficulty reading, tracking moving objects, or accurately localizing targets in their visual field. This can manifest as slow, inaccurate, or hypometric saccades.

Use this code when documentation indicates a specific diagnosis of deficient saccadic eye movements, often identified during an ophthalmological or neurological examination. This diagnosis is typically supported by findings from oculomotor testing, such as electro-oculography (EOG) or video-oculography (VOG), demonstrating abnormal saccadic velocity, latency, or accuracy.

• Do not confuse this with nystagmus (H55.0x) or other types of abnormal eye movements unless deficient saccades are specifically documented.
• Always review the physician's notes for the specific type and characteristics of the saccadic deficit to ensure accurate coding.
• Consider co-occurring neurological conditions (e.g., Parkinson's disease, cerebellar disorders) that may be the underlying cause and should be coded first if applicable.
