Rectal polyp

This code represents a benign growth or mass protruding from the lining of the rectum. These polyps are typically non-cancerous but may require removal due to symptoms or potential for future malignant transformation.

Use this code when documentation specifies a rectal polyp without further histological classification, or when the polyp is explicitly stated as non-adenomatous. This code is appropriate for symptomatic or asymptomatic polyps identified during colonoscopy, sigmoidoscopy, or other imaging studies.

• Do not use this code if the documentation specifies an adenomatous polyp; refer to codes in the D12.x series.
• If the polyp is removed, code the polyp first, followed by the appropriate procedure code for the polypectomy.
• Ensure the medical record clearly identifies the location as rectal and specifies the non-adenomatous nature (or lack of further classification) of the polyp.
