Hirsutism

This code represents hirsutism, a condition characterized by excessive growth of coarse, dark hair in a male-like pattern (e.g., face, chest, back) in women. It is typically caused by elevated androgen levels or increased sensitivity of hair follicles to androgens.

Use this code when documentation clearly indicates a diagnosis of hirsutism. This often occurs in the context of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), adrenal disorders, or as an idiopathic condition. Supporting documentation should describe the location and extent of the abnormal hair growth.

• Do not confuse hirsutism with hypertrichosis, which is generalized excessive hair growth not limited to an androgen-dependent pattern.
