Postinflammatory hyperpigmentation

This code describes a type of skin discoloration characterized by darkened patches that appear after an inflammatory skin condition has resolved. It results from increased melanin production in response to inflammation, leading to persistent brown, black, or gray areas on the skin.

Assign this code when documentation specifies hyperpigmentation occurring as a sequela of a prior inflammatory process, such as acne, eczema, psoriasis, or injury. Ensure the physician explicitly links the hyperpigmentation to a preceding inflammatory event.

• Do not use for hyperpigmentation of unknown origin or congenital hyperpigmentation.
• Code the underlying inflammatory condition first if it is still active and being treated.
• Distinguish from other forms of hyperpigmentation like melasma (L81.1) or freckles (L81.2).
