This code represents a benign vascular lesion of the skin or mucous membranes, characterized by rapid growth and a red, often ulcerated, friable surface. It is a reactive proliferation of capillaries, typically occurring after minor trauma or irritation. While generally harmless, it can bleed easily and may require removal.

Documentation should clearly identify the lesion as a pyogenic granuloma and specify its non-gingival, non-maxillary alveolar ridge, and non-oral mucosal location. This code is appropriate for initial diagnosis and subsequent encounters related to management or removal of the lesion.

• If the pyogenic granuloma is located on the gingiva, maxillary alveolar ridge, or oral mucosa, refer to the K06.8, K04.5, or K13.4 codes, respectively.
