This applies to patients whose kidney function has deteriorated to the point of requiring dialysis, but they are either awaiting initiation, have chosen not to pursue it, or are receiving acute, temporary dialysis.

• Do not use this code if the patient is receiving chronic dialysis; instead, refer to the Excludes1 note.
• Ensure the physician's documentation clearly specifies "stage 5" or "ESRD" without chronic dialysis.
• Always sequence this code as a secondary diagnosis if the reason for the encounter is related to a complication of CKD or another primary condition.
