Secondary amenorrhea

This code represents the cessation of menstruation for at least three consecutive cycles, or for six months, in a female who has previously menstruated. It indicates that the absence of menses is not due to primary amenorrhea (never having menstruated) but is a secondary development.

Use this code when a patient presents with a history of regular or irregular menstrual cycles, followed by a prolonged absence of menses. Documentation should clearly state "secondary amenorrhea" or describe the cessation of menstruation after menarche.

• Differentiate from primary amenorrhea (N91.0) where menstruation has never occurred.
• Always look for and code any underlying cause or associated conditions, such as polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) or pituitary disorders, as additional diagnoses.
• Ensure the documentation specifies that the patient has previously menstruated to support the "secondary" aspect of the diagnosis.
