Use this code when documentation clearly indicates a genital tract or pelvic infection occurring as a sequela of a failed attempted termination of pregnancy. This applies when the attempted termination did not result in a complete abortion and subsequent infection developed. Supporting documentation should specify both the failed attempt and the resulting infection type and location.

• Ensure documentation specifies "failed attempted termination" and not a spontaneous abortion or complete induced abortion.
• Distinguish between a general pelvic infection and a urinary tract infection (O07.38) or sepsis (O07.37), as these are Excludes1 conditions.
• Code any specific infectious organism identified, if applicable, as an additional diagnosis.
