Anemia of the puerperium

This code describes anemia that develops during the postpartum period, specifically from the end of the third stage of labor until six weeks after childbirth. It signifies a new onset of anemia or a worsening of a previously undiagnosed anemic state that manifests during the puerperium.

Use this code when documentation clearly indicates anemia presenting or worsening during the six-week postpartum period, without a prior diagnosis of anemia complicating the pregnancy. This applies to cases where the anemia is a direct consequence of the recent childbirth, such as blood loss during delivery. Supporting documentation would include physician notes detailing anemia diagnosis and its onset postpartum.

• Do not use for anemia that was present and documented before or during pregnancy and continued into the puerperium; refer to O99.03 for such cases.
• Ensure the documentation specifies the anemia's onset or diagnosis within the puerperal period (up to six weeks postpartum).
• Sequence this code as a secondary diagnosis when the primary reason for the encounter is related to the anemia's management.
