Macroglossia

This code describes an abnormally large tongue. Macroglossia can be congenital or acquired, and may interfere with speech, eating, and breathing. It is often a manifestation of an underlying systemic condition.

Use this code when documentation clearly indicates an enlarged tongue, regardless of the underlying etiology. This diagnosis is supported by physical examination findings noting the increased size of the tongue, and may be further substantiated by imaging studies or pathology reports if a biopsy is performed.

• Do not confuse with glossitis (inflammation of the tongue) unless macroglossia is specifically documented as a feature.
• Always code any underlying systemic condition causing the macroglossia first, if known and documented (e.g., Down syndrome, amyloidosis, hypothyroidism).
• Ensure documentation specifies "macroglossia" rather than general terms like "enlarged tongue" if a more specific diagnosis is available.
