Cervical rib

This code describes an anomalous extra rib originating from the seventh cervical vertebra, which may be unilateral or bilateral. This congenital anomaly can be asymptomatic or lead to neurovascular compression, commonly known as thoracic outlet syndrome.

Use this code when documentation explicitly states the presence of a cervical rib. This includes cases identified incidentally on imaging or when it is the underlying cause of symptoms such as pain, numbness, or weakness in the upper extremity.

• Always code any associated symptoms or conditions, such as thoracic outlet syndrome (G54.0), in addition to the cervical rib.
• Specify laterality (left, right, bilateral) if documented, using appropriate subcodes.
• Ensure documentation clearly distinguishes a cervical rib from other rib anomalies or cervical spine abnormalities.
