Unhappiness

This code describes a subjective state of general dissatisfaction or discontent, often without a specific, identifiable cause or a more severe underlying mental health disorder. It reflects a feeling of being unhappy or not content with one's circumstances.

Use this code when documentation indicates a patient expresses general unhappiness or discontent that does not meet criteria for a more specific mood disorder (e.g., depression, anxiety). It is appropriate when the patient's primary complaint is a feeling of unhappiness, and no other more specific diagnosis is established.

• Do not use this code if a more specific mental health diagnosis (e.g., F32.x for major depressive disorder) is documented.
• Consider if Z73.0 (Burn-out) or Z73.81 (Behavioral insomnia, due to mental disorder, not elsewhere classified) might be more appropriate if the unhappiness is related to specific stressors.
• Ensure documentation clearly states "unhappiness" or a similar general term without further qualifying symptoms that would point to a more specific condition.
