Apraxia

This code represents apraxia, a neurological disorder characterized by the inability to perform learned, purposeful movements despite having the physical ability and desire to do so. It results from damage to specific areas of the brain involved in motor planning and execution, not from primary motor weakness, sensory loss, or lack of comprehension.

Use this code when documentation clearly states a diagnosis of apraxia without a specified underlying cause, or when the apraxia is not directly attributable to a cerebrovascular event. Supporting documentation should describe the patient's inability to execute motor tasks despite intact motor and sensory function, and the absence of a recent stroke or TIA as the etiology.

• Do not use this code if the apraxia is explicitly documented as a sequela of cerebrovascular disease; instead, refer to the I69.x90 codes.
• Ensure documentation differentiates apraxia from ataxia, dysarthria, or aphasia, as these are distinct conditions.
• Always review the medical record for any underlying conditions that may be causing the apraxia and code them appropriately as primary or secondary diagnoses.
