Apply this code when documentation clearly indicates diffuse, non-localized swelling affecting multiple body regions. This is appropriate when the underlying cause of the generalized edema is either unknown, not yet diagnosed, or not being coded separately at the time of service. Supporting documentation would include physician notes describing "generalized edema," "anasarca," or "diffuse swelling."

• Do not use this code if the edema is localized to a specific body part (e.g., pedal edema, cerebral edema); use a more specific code.
• Always attempt to code the underlying cause of the generalized edema first, if known and documented (e.g., congestive heart failure, renal failure). This code would then be secondary.
• Be mindful of the Excludes2 note; do not use this code for edema specifically attributed to nutritional deficiencies (e.g., kwashiorkor, marasmus).
