Impaired fasting glucose

This code signifies a prediabetic state characterized by elevated blood glucose levels after an overnight fast, but not high enough to meet the criteria for a diabetes diagnosis. It indicates a higher risk for developing type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Apply this code when documentation explicitly states "impaired fasting glucose," "prediabetes," or "borderline diabetes" based on a fasting plasma glucose (FPG) test result between 100 mg/dL and 125 mg/dL. This code is appropriate when the patient does not yet meet the diagnostic criteria for type 2 diabetes.

• Do not use this code if the patient has a confirmed diagnosis of type 1 or type 2 diabetes.
• Distinguish carefully from impaired glucose tolerance (R73.02), which is based on an oral glucose tolerance test.
• Sequence as a primary diagnosis when the reason for the encounter is management or monitoring of the impaired fasting glucose.
