Abrasion of lip, sequela

This code describes the long-term effects or complications resulting from a past abrasion injury to the lip. It indicates that the initial injury has healed, but residual issues such as scarring, altered sensation, or functional impairment persist. This is not for the initial acute injury.

Use this code when documentation clearly indicates a current condition or symptom directly attributable to a previously sustained abrasion of the lip. This applies to follow-up encounters where the sequela, not the acute injury, is the focus of treatment or evaluation. Supporting documentation should specify the nature of the sequela (e.g., "scarring from old lip abrasion").

• Requires a seventh character "S" to indicate sequela; do not use for active or acute abrasions.
• Always sequence the sequela code first, followed by codes for the specific manifestation of the sequela (e.g., scar, pain).
• Distinguish carefully from codes for current, active abrasions (e.g., S00.511A, S00.511D).
