Nontoxic uninodular goiter

This code represents an enlargement of the thyroid gland (goiter) that is characterized by a single nodule, is not associated with hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism, and is not due to iodine deficiency. The thyroid function tests are typically within normal limits.

Use this code when documentation specifies a solitary thyroid nodule without evidence of thyroid dysfunction or malignancy. It is appropriate for patients presenting with a palpable or imaging-detected single thyroid nodule where thyroid hormone levels are euthyroid.

• Ensure documentation explicitly states "uninodular" and "nontoxic" to support this code.
• Distinguish from multinodular goiter (241.1) and other forms of goiter based on etiology or toxicity.
• If malignancy is suspected or confirmed, a more specific code for the neoplasm should be used, often in conjunction with this code if the goiter itself is also documented.
