Postmastectomy lymphedema syndrome

This code describes the chronic swelling of an arm or hand that occurs as a complication following a mastectomy, typically due to damage or removal of lymph nodes during breast cancer treatment. It results from impaired lymphatic drainage, leading to fluid accumulation in the affected limb.

Use this code when documentation clearly indicates lymphedema in a patient with a history of mastectomy. Supporting documentation should specify the affected limb and the causal link to the prior surgical intervention for breast cancer.

• Always link this code to a personal history of malignant neoplasm of the breast (V10.3).
• Do not confuse with general lymphedema (457.1) or other forms of secondary lymphedema not related to mastectomy.
• Consider additional codes for any associated complications or treatments, such as cellulitis or skin changes.
