Cervicitis and endocervicitis

This code describes inflammation of the cervix, which can include the exocervix (cervicitis) and/or the endocervix (endocervicitis). This condition is often caused by infection but can also result from chemical irritation or trauma. Patients may present with vaginal discharge, intermenstrual bleeding, or dyspareunia.

Use this code when documentation explicitly states a diagnosis of cervicitis or endocervicitis. This diagnosis is typically made based on clinical examination findings, such as cervical erythema, friability, or mucopurulent discharge, often confirmed by laboratory testing for infectious agents. It is appropriate when the inflammation is localized to the cervix.

• Ensure documentation specifies inflammation of the cervix; do not use for generalized vaginitis or vulvovaginitis.
• If an infectious agent is identified (e.g., Chlamydia, Gonorrhea), code the underlying infection first, followed by this code as a manifestation.
• Distinguish from cervical erosion or ectropion, which are anatomical variations and not necessarily inflammatory conditions.
