Hallux malleus

Hallux malleus, also known as mallet toe of the great toe, is a deformity characterized by a flexion contracture of the distal interphalangeal (DIP) joint of the hallux. This results in the tip of the great toe pointing downwards, often causing pain and callus formation due to shoe friction. It is distinct from hallux rigidus or hallux valgus.

This code is used when documentation clearly indicates a mallet toe deformity specifically affecting the great toe. It applies to acquired or congenital forms of this condition. Supporting documentation should describe the flexion deformity of the DIP joint of the hallux.

• Differentiate from hallux rigidus (osteoarthritis of the MTP joint) or hallux valgus (bunion), which are distinct deformities.
• Ensure the documentation specifies the great toe (hallux) and the mallet (flexion at DIP) deformity.
• Consider additional codes for any associated pain, calluses, or ulcers if documented.
