Extravasation of urine

This code describes the leakage of urine from the urinary tract into surrounding tissues. This can occur due to trauma, obstruction, or surgical complications, leading to fluid accumulation outside the normal urinary pathways.

Use this code when documentation indicates urine has escaped from the bladder, ureters, or kidneys into adjacent anatomical spaces. This diagnosis is supported by findings such as perirenal fluid collections, urinoma, or extravasation noted on imaging studies (e.g., CT urogram, retrograde pyelogram).

• Always specify the underlying cause of the extravasation if known (e.g., trauma, iatrogenic injury) with an additional code.
• Do not confuse with urinary incontinence (788.3x) or hematuria (599.7x), which describe different urinary tract issues.
• Ensure documentation clearly distinguishes between extravasation and simple urinary retention or obstruction without leakage.
