This code signifies tissue damage to the face resulting from exposure to freezing temperatures. It encompasses all degrees of frostbite, from superficial skin involvement to deep tissue necrosis affecting facial structures.

Apply this code when documentation clearly indicates a diagnosis of frostbite specifically affecting any part of the patient's face (e.g., nose, ears, cheeks, chin). Supporting documentation should detail the affected facial area and the etiology of cold exposure.

• Differentiate from hypothermia (991.6) which is a systemic condition, not localized tissue damage.
• Do not use for chilblains (268.1), which are inflammatory lesions due to cold, not freezing.
• Consider an E-code to identify the external cause of the frostbite (e.g., exposure to excessive cold, accidental).
