Transient tic disorder

This code represents a neurological condition characterized by the sudden, rapid, recurrent, nonrhythmic, stereotyped motor or vocal movements known as tics. In transient tic disorder, these tics are present for at least four weeks but for less than 12 consecutive months. The tics are typically simple and may involve eye blinking, head jerking, or throat clearing.

Use this code when documentation indicates a patient presents with tics that have been observed for a duration greater than one month but less than one year. This diagnosis is appropriate when the tics cause significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning. Documentation should clearly specify the duration of the tic symptoms to differentiate from other tic disorders.

• Do not use this code if the tics have persisted for 12 months or longer; consider codes for chronic motor or vocal tic disorder (F95.1) or Tourette's disorder (F95.2).
• Ensure the medical record specifies the onset and duration of the tics to support the "transient" nature of the diagnosis.
• Distinguish from other movement disorders or medication-induced tics, which would be coded differently.
