Other drug induced dystonia

This code represents involuntary, sustained muscle contractions causing twisting and repetitive movements or abnormal fixed postures, specifically when induced by a medication other than levodopa. These dystonic reactions can affect various body parts, including the face, neck, trunk, and limbs.

Use this code when documentation clearly indicates dystonia as an adverse effect of a prescribed or illicit drug, excluding levodopa. This applies to acute or chronic drug-induced dystonia where the specific drug is identified as the causative agent. Supporting documentation should include a detailed medication history and a clear link between the drug and the onset of dystonic symptoms.

• Always identify the specific drug causing the dystonia and code it as an adverse effect (T36-T50 with a 5th or 6th character of 5).
• Do not use this code for dystonia due to levodopa; refer to G24.01 for levodopa-induced dystonia.
• Ensure the documentation differentiates drug-induced dystonia from other forms of secondary dystonia or primary dystonia.
