Thombos of atrium/auric append/ventr as current comp fol AMI

This code describes the formation of a blood clot within the heart chambers (atrium, auricular appendage, or ventricle) that occurs as a direct consequence of a recent acute myocardial infarction (heart attack). These thrombi can lead to serious complications such as stroke or systemic embolism.

Use this code when documentation clearly states that a thrombus in the atrium, auricular appendage, or ventricle is a current complication directly resulting from an acute MI. The patient's medical record should specify the acute MI and the subsequent development of the cardiac thrombus.

• Distinguish carefully between thrombi occurring as a complication of an acute MI versus those occurring independently (I51.3).
• Ensure the documentation explicitly links the cardiac thrombus to the acute MI as a current complication.
• Always code the underlying acute myocardial infarction first, followed by this complication code.
