Postinfarction angina

This code describes the occurrence of angina pectoris that develops after a myocardial infarction (heart attack). It signifies ischemic chest pain that arises as a complication of a recent or past heart attack, indicating ongoing myocardial ischemia.

Use this code when documentation clearly states "postinfarction angina" or describes angina occurring after a myocardial infarction. This applies to both new onset angina following an MI and exacerbation of pre-existing angina in the post-MI period. Supporting documentation should include a confirmed diagnosis of a prior MI and current anginal symptoms.

• Always sequence the acute myocardial infarction (if still within the 28-day timeframe) or the history of myocardial infarction (I25.2) first, followed by this code.
• Do not confuse with unstable angina (I20.0) unless specifically documented as postinfarction.
• Ensure the documentation specifies angina and its relationship to a prior MI; general chest pain after an MI may not qualify.
