Dysplasia of anus

This code represents the presence of abnormal cell growth in the anal canal that is not yet cancerous. It indicates a precancerous lesion or a change in the cellular structure of the anal tissue that is considered low-grade or moderate dysplasia.

Use this code when documentation specifies dysplasia of the anus, often identified through biopsy results. This diagnosis typically follows an abnormal anal Pap test or other screening, and subsequent histological confirmation of low-grade or moderate cellular changes.

• Do not use this code if the documentation specifies severe dysplasia, carcinoma in situ, or high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HGSIL), as these are coded to D01.3.
• Ensure there is histological confirmation of dysplasia; abnormal cytologic findings without biopsy confirmation are coded to R85.61-.
• Review the pathology report carefully to differentiate between mild/moderate dysplasia (K62.82) and severe dysplasia/carcinoma in situ (D01.3).
