This code represents the passage of dark, tarry stools (melena) in a newborn, indicating upper gastrointestinal bleeding. This condition is distinct from blood passed from the mother during delivery.

Use this code when a neonate presents with melena and the source of the bleeding is determined to be intrinsic to the infant's gastrointestinal tract. Documentation should clearly state "neonatal melena" and rule out swallowed maternal blood.
