Neonatal cutaneous hemorrhage

This code describes bleeding that occurs on or just under the skin surface of a newborn, appearing as petechiae, purpura, or ecchymoses. It signifies a non-traumatic, non-birth injury related cutaneous bleed in a neonate.

Use this code for newborns presenting with spontaneous skin hemorrhages not attributable to birth trauma. Documentation should clearly indicate the presence of cutaneous bleeding and rule out birth injury as the cause.

• Differentiate carefully from birth injury-related bruising (P12.3) or cephalhematoma (P12.0), which are excluded.
• Ensure documentation specifies "neonatal" and "cutaneous hemorrhage" without evidence of external trauma.
• Consider co-occurring conditions, such as coagulation disorders, that may contribute to the hemorrhage, and code them additionally.
