Expsr to (environmental) tobacco smoke in the perinat period

This code identifies an infant's exposure to tobacco smoke from parents or the environment during the perinatal period, which spans from the 22nd week of gestation through the first 28 days after birth. This exposure is external to the mother's direct physiological processes affecting the fetus.

Apply this code when documentation explicitly states an infant was exposed to tobacco smoke post-birth or during the late gestational period, but not in utero via maternal smoking. This is often noted in well-child visits, NICU admissions, or when evaluating respiratory issues in newborns.

• Do not use this code for in utero exposure; refer to P04.2 for that scenario.
• This code is for exposure during the perinatal period; use Z77.22 for exposure after this period.
• Ensure documentation clearly distinguishes between direct maternal smoking during pregnancy and environmental/parental smoke exposure during the perinatal timeframe.
