Other anophthalmos

This code describes a congenital absence of the eyeball, excluding cases where the absence is due to a cystic eye or other specified forms of anophthalmos. It represents a developmental failure of the optic vesicle to form or grow, resulting in the complete absence of ocular tissue within the orbit.

Use this code when documentation clearly indicates a congenital absence of the globe that is not otherwise specified as cystic or another distinct type of anophthalmos. This diagnosis is typically made at birth or shortly thereafter based on physical examination and imaging studies confirming the lack of an eyeball.

• Ensure documentation specifies "other" anophthalmos to differentiate from cystic anophthalmos (Q11.2).
• Always review imaging reports (e.g., MRI, CT) if available, as they provide definitive confirmation of globe absence.
• Do not use this code for acquired absence of the eye (e.g., enucleation), which would be coded with Z90.01.
